A WORD FROM RON GUSTAFSON
NWRSF PRESIDENT

COMPETITIVE
ROLLER SKATING

We have a great sport that attracts many diverse individuals seeking healthful recreation, athletic challenges, and artistic expression. we also find that it provides us an excellent social networking environment in which to meet people with similar interests. Perhaps even more important than any of these advantages is the fact that the sport is relatively inexpensive when compared to other sports and ecologically has a negligible impact on our environment.
Roller skating has several othere advantages in that it can be done indoors and outdoors, has low probablility for injury or long term damage to our bodies, and it can be enjoyed during most of your life...And it is fun! It is even more fun as you compete in one or more phases of the sport. You get feedback on how well your skills are developing and you test yourself in pressure-packed contests that have little negative consequences if you don't do well.

The Northwest Roller Skating Foundation (NWRST) is celebrating its 11th year of "Fostering the Sport of Competitive Roller Skating in the Northwest". We have supported the World Team members from the Northwest region by defraying some of their expenses in getting to Australia. Kylee Berger was one of those skaters pictured here.

We have sponsored the NW Skate Camp this and for a number of years. Also we have assisted individual skaters that couldn't afford to compete, andwe have initiated the "new skater" program. Whilte we feel our efforts have produced good results, we had hoped for more growth in our sport.
The Oaks had to cancel their Adult Invitational meet dur to a small number of entries, and other contests are experiencing a drop off in contestants. While this is probably caused by economic factors affecting our country, we still are facing a major challenge in keeping and expanding our sport.
As always, the NWRSF if looking for suggestions on how our organization can best support competitive foller skating n our region. Please send us your recommendations. While we have financial resources to carry out many of the programs, we would also ask that you consider a tax deductible donation to the Foundation to enable mor of our efforts in bringing this sport to more and more individuals

NWRS
Options for donations are many and varied. Contributying to the NWRSF will ensure the growth and expansion. Knowing the great returns in the form of "pride of accomplishment" for those competing in amateur roller skating the logical choice for your contibution dollars is the NWRSF.
Unlike other foundation and chritable organizations, 99 percent of your donation goes directly to fostering the sport. Our community wins as well by having a safe, healthy and low cost family activity available to most of the people regardless of age, athletic prowess or economic conditions. Extend a hand that helps a child or an adult to develop self esteem and a worth ethic in pursuing competitive excellence.

CONTRIBUTIONS CLASSES MAKE TO SKATING

Where do we get skaters that will become "Club Members"?
The recreational skater is where we acquire club members. I know that I have acquired a lot of skaters that have gone on to place at Nationals through classes. You will also find some that will be very happy to be a recreational skater and will join the club to learn and progress but do not want to skate tests or competition. We always need to find a place for all abilities to make a successful club. Recreational skaters are just as important as the more involved.
Club members come in many stages of interest and have different ideas of how involved they want to get and they need someone to show them what is offered. Why should a skater join the club if they don't know what it is, what activites that are available to them to take them where they decided to go? They need to be shown.

The skating instructor that teaches class is one of the most important parts of advertising skating, creating interest and showing them that skating is a lifelong hobby and can be very rewarding. The instructor must show true interest, enthusiasm, encourage all abilities. Without the instructor being sincerely interested, the class will be a boring class. Basically the class instructor must enjoy what they are doing. The class will function, and out of the class, if skaters are channeled into the proper area in the club, the club will grow. There are three type of members: Recreational, Tests, Competitions, WHICH ARE ALL IMPORTANT. Remember they all need to "fit in"
Good, organized and interesting classes showing the skater where the skater can progress, is very important to forming a strong club. The club advertises skating for the rink it is registered with. The club contributes only a small part of the rink’s income and if the club is successful it assures that the club has a rink to register out of. As a business, the rink will look at what the club does for them, bringing in new skaters to be come club members, or just bringing in new session skaters. The rink is a business, and to make skating work we need to help the rink's business too. They all work together.

WE MUST MAKE SKATING FUN AND APPEALING TO THE BEGINNER JUST AS MUCH AS TO THE NATIONAL WINNER WHO HAS ALREADY SET THEIR GOALS

Our goal is to raise funds for the financial aid to assist these deserving skaters with their expenses such as travel, lodging, skating education, coaching assistance, costumes, skate replacement or repairs, entry fees and more.

Lack of funding should ot prevent talented roller skaters from developing their skills.

We welcome you as our partner in sharing a commitment to the future of our sport. Your tax deductable contribution will help a roller skater fulfill his or her goals, and will be greatly appreciated.

WHAT IS THE FOUNDATION'S MISSION

Mission
The mission of the Northwest Roller Skating Foundation is "to foster the sport of competitive amateur roller skating in the Northwest Region" (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Alaska, Hawaii, Utah).

Background
Organized competitive Roller Sports has existed since the 1920's and is currently governed by U. S. A. Roller Sports. This organization is the officially recognized by the International governing body and by the United States Olympic Committee.

Our sport has approximately 4,500 amateur athletes throughout the United States. There are local, regional and national competitions to improve their skills. These competitions help foster health, values of sportsmanship, and behaviors that enhance success in adult life. The Northwest Region has approximately 500 skaters who compete annually. The Northwest Region currently has 5 skaters who have qualified to compete in International World Competitions. The USA governing body does not pay for the international travel of the athletes that qualify to compete at a World Meet.

There are three types of Roller Sports.
Roller Hockey is played with both puck and ball. The rules are similar to those of Ice Hockey and Field Hockey. The USA team is currently the World Champions in Puck Hockey and ranked 6th in Ball Hockey. Ball Hockey is extremely popular and visible in other countries.

Roller Speed has several elements for its participants. There are indoor races similar to short track speed as seen in Ice Speed events. There are road races on prescribed tracks throughout host cities and there is a marathon event. The US is currently ranked 6th in the World but has the current marathon champion. Former US speed champions have moved to Ice Speed to seek training funds. These include Olympians Derek Parra, Jennifer Rodriguez, Apollo Ohno, and Chad Hendrick.

Artistic Skating is similar to Ice Figure Skating. The rules and events are similar with Dance, Figures, Free Skating, Pairs and Precision Teams. The US is currently ranked 4th in World competition.

Roller Skating Sports reflects the diversity of the USA. Approximately 8% of the registered amateurs are African American and 9% Asian. Hispanic Americans are approximately 20% of registered amateurs. There are events for all age divisions from 5 years of age through older adults in their 60's and 70's. Approximately 38% of all skaters are above the age of 25. Sixty percent of skaters are female. Economically, Roller Skaters are live in households with an average household income of $41,000 - $60,000 with an average family size of 5. The costs of competitive skating can total $3,500 a year (includes instruction approximately $40/hr, club dues $40/mo, Equipment $500/yr and travel to competitions $1000/yr). It is obvious that participation is a challenge with the expenses of normal household of 5 people and the other family expenses.

We are seeking the support of persons who may be interested in competitive sports and the families that help make the skaters participation a reality.
